Male Reproductive System
- Testes
- This is where the sperm are made by meiosis.
- Epididymis
- A coiled tube which stores sperm
- Scrotum
- a bag which contains the testes and hangs below the abdomen. This is because the sperm need to be produced and stored at a temperature just below normal body temperature.
- Sperm duct (vas defrens)
- a tube which carries the sperm from the epididymis to the prostate gland.
- Prostate gland & Seminal Vesicle
- glands which produce fluid which nourishes the sperm and when mixed with sperm forms semen.
- Urethra
- a tube which carries either urine or semen (not both at the same time) through the penis.
- Penis
- for placing sperm at the end of the vagina in the female.
- Erectile tissue
- spongy tissue which when filled with blood swells up making the penis hard and erect.
Female Reproductive System
- Vulva
- Outer folds of skin which surround the opening to the vagina.
- Vagina
- a stretchy tube where the penis is inserted during intercourse and where the semen is deposited.
- Cervix
- the neck of the womb.
- Uterus (womb)
- muscular organ where the baby develops during pregnancy.
- Fallopian tube (Oviduct)
- a delicate tube which helps transport the ovum from the ovary to the uterus. It is here that the ovum is fertilised.
- Ovary
- Where the eggs are produced.
