A Level Literature

Syllabus

At present, students follow the NEAB English Literature Syllabus which, consists of both coursework and terminal examination.

Student Skills Required

Students should enjoy literature and be prepared to read a wide range of books. They must show commitment which, involves not only discipline in writing essays but also a willingness to be actively involved in class discussions and to read widely around the subject. Students would be expected to have obtained a grade A or B at GCSE English and English Literature.

Course Content

Poetry, prose and drama both classical and contemporary are studied during the course. Some texts are used for coursework whilst others are explored in a variety of ways in preparation for the final examination. The practical criticism of poetry and prose is also developed towards a terminal examination. Students are encouraged to explore their own responses.

Method of Assessment

The assessment pattern will consist of 20% coursework and 80% terminal examination. The coursework will be based on the study of three texts. There will be two examination papers each of two hours based on: Unseen Critical Appreciation Two selected texts Two Shakespeare texts

Teaching Style/Methods

Lessons often take the form of discussion sessions focusing on a text with individual, pair, small group and whole class work being developed at different times. Students may be asked to lead discussions or lessons. They are expected to have read the texts beforehand in order to think and work critically in the classroom.

Career Opportunities

English 'A' Level helps to open the way to many areas of Further and Higher Education and gives access to a wide range of employment opportunities. It helps to develop critical writing skills and to develop personal confidence.
