INTERNATIONAL/GlOBAL POLICY












Beverley High School has a commitment to the International/Global dimension. We achieved the British Council’s International School Award in 2002 and 2006. We are a member of the Yorkshire and Humber Global Schools Association and was the first secondary school in the East Riding of Yorkshire to achieve the YHGSA's Global School Award.
Beverley High School is committed to:
- helping pupils to raise their awareness of the wider world in which they live
- encouraging pupils to appreciate the richness and cultural diversity of the world
We intend:
- to encourage all curriculum areas to consciously develop the international & global dimension at all Key Stages
- to create opportunities for pupils to visit other countries and learn about other cultures
- to welcome visitors from other countries into the school
- to enable staff to benefit from professional development opportunities in other countries
We aim:
- to enable pupils to develop a sense of their own identity and explore their own cultural heritage
- to promote respect for people of all cultures and learn to value the achievements of all cultures
- to encourage pupils’ desire to learn about global issues and to assist them in developing responsible attitudes towards such issues
- to develop our pupils as global citizens eager and equipped to participate actively in an increasingly globalized world
International Committee
The school has an active International Committee made up of committed teachers from a range of subject departments from within the school. It meets half-termly to discuss international and global links and curriculum issues.
International/Global Links
Japan Partner School: Keiai Gakuen Senior High School, Chiba Link established: 2000 Details of Link: BHS provids a 4 week homestay experience each year for female students from KGSHS. Every 2 years BHS organises a school trip to KGSHS in Japan. New Developments: BHS and Hornsea School and Languages College organise their first joint trip to Japan in October 2007. Sri Lanka Partner School : Sujatha Girls’ School, Matara, Nr Galle Link established: June 2007 Details of Link: Regular email communication has led to an action plan and school partnership agreement. Curriculum work in both schools commenced in September 2007 with work, at Beverley High School, completed by Year 8 students in RE and PSHCE. |

The United States of America Partner School : Holland Middle School, Council Rock School District, Pennsylvania Link established: Spring 2007 Details of Link: Mr Smith, Head of History, began a link with this school after receiving an email. The American teacher had heard of Mr Smith’s work with European countries through the British Council’s e-Twinning initiative. With British Council funding he visited the school in May half term 2007 and and established a joint curriculum project in History. The project involved synchronising the teaching of a jointly planned lesson so that Beverley High School contacts: Mr S. Smith |
Future Developments: It is hoped that Mr Smith’s American colleague will be able to visit BHS in the near future.

The Netherlands Partner School: t’Atrium School, Amersfoort Link established: 2006 Details of Link: In 2006 BHS was approached by a tutor for Hull University’s PGCE course who was trying to find a link for t’Atrium School which is located 40 miles from Amsterdam. They deliver a bilingual (Dutch/English) curriculum and wanted to extend their links with schools in English speaking countries. The Principal and Vice-Principal of the school visited BHS and we agreed to take teachers on short term placements in order to provide immersion in the English language. In September 2007 the first of these an Art teacher and a History teacher arrived. A joint curriculum project in History has been developed from that visit. |

France Partner Institution: Institut Universitaire de Formation De Maitres de Lorraine Link established: 2005 Details of Link: BHS has provided a French trainee teacher with a short work-shadow placement in Geography. BHS teachers and pupils benefit by learning about the French education system and they have an extra pair of hands in the classroom! |

Switzerland Partner Institution: Zurich University of Teacher Education, Zurich Link established: 2006 Details of Link: BHS has provided a Swiss teacher with a short work-shadow placement in Design Technology. BHS teachers and pupils benefit by learning about the Swiss education system and they have an extra pair of hands in the classroom! |

Italy Partner Institution: University of Milan Link established: 2008 Details of Link: BHS has provided a Italian trainee teacher with a short work-shadow placement in Art and English Literature. BHS teachers and pupils benefit by learning about the Italian education system and they have an extra pair of hands in the classroom! The teacher was also involved in delivering Italian language lessons at lunchtime. |

International/Global Curriculum Development
International Festival Days
Each year Beverley High School organises an international festival day in the summer term for one year group (this rotates between Year 8 and Year 10).
The first of these was in 2004 to celebrate our link with Japan.

In 2006 the focus was Indonesia with workshops for Year 8 on the Gamalan, the Spice Trade, Batik, Dance and religion.

| In 2007 the focus was the Americas with workshops for Year 10 on Native American jewellery, Samba music, Spanish, Salsa dance, US Food and a visit to the local Mormon Church.

In 2008 the focus was Sri Lanka with workshops for Year 8 on such things as Sri Lankan food, tea-tasting and tourism. We were joined for the day by two Sri Lankan students from The aim of these days is to widen pupils awareness of the world in order that they can celebrate diversity. BHS Contact: Miss S. Japp |

Global Schools UK Project
In 2006/2007 six subject departments (History, Geography, RE, PSE, English and D&T) worked with Leeds Development Education Centre (DEC) on a national pilot project funded by the Department for International Development (DfID). The purpose of the project was to enable schools to develop and make explicit the global dimension in the curriculum. The lesson plans and resources produced by the teachers involved will be published on a website and will be available to teachers across the country.
BHS was the first East Riding secondary school to achieve the YHGSA’s Global Schools Award

Millennium Development Goals Project MDG15
Beverley High School is one of 4 schools in the region involved with an exciting new international active citizenship project run by Leeds DEC. Its key goal is to support the development of lessons that explore themes such as Social Justice, Sustainable Development, Human Rights and Global Citizenship. It will culminate in 2010 in an international conference for young people in the Czech Republic, some of our students will attend this conference. The project is funded by the EU, DfID and Oxfam.

What are the Millennium Development Goals? 
In 2000 the United Nations adopted a series of goals to tackle some of the world’s most serious problems. These goals are:
